It was a genuine revelation to me that lot of Netflix shows are made as background noise. I really liked the phrase - "I like the media that is so good it demands your full attention" - that's how I approached my media in general. But yeah it's very easy to fall into the distraction trap.

I disagree with your point on gambling. Yes the sponsor money from crypto gambling and hello fresh both come from viewers but one is an unregulated crypto casino in which there's no barriers (such as a volentary exclusion or age requirement) whereas hello fresh is a meal delivery service with overpriced food. One is far worse and boiling it down to that single critique was a bit disingenuous.

I think it's important to be mindful of what we distract ourselves with and why. Catching up on an educational podcast about your favorite hobby to make doing dishes less tedious is a lot different from doomscrolling to pass the time while watching a video essay about something you didn't care about until you saw it in your RUclips feed. In the former instance, you're supplementing a household chore with knowledge you'll likely apply to something you really enjoy doing, while in the latter instance you're wasting time that could've been spent on a fun hobby while actively making yourself more miserable. I really do think it's up to the individual to decide for themselves what distractions are worth it, but a decision does need to be made. The next time you find yourself watching a video essay, stop and ask yourself if doing so is making your life better or if it's making your life worse, and really take a moment to assess whether or not the content aligns with your values as a person. You can't watch everything, but that doesn't mean you can't watch anything. Make a choice. Don't let influencers or the algorithm or some megacorporation make that choice for you by preying on your desire for instant gratification.

Okay, I know native was called out in this video, but they make sugar cookie and candy cane scented deodorant and I adore christmas smells. I know they are overpriced but I couldnt find anything else with these smells.

Nowadays I skip sponsor sections no matter how integrated or funny they are but I used to always feel I had to watch them and some RUclipsrs can barely hide their contempt and are over the moon when they get a sponsor that doesn’t police the sections

Most "influencers" lie because they are narcissists. That's the whole reason they want to be famous. Not all, but most.

My thing for something like the 'two cups of liquid' is that I would simply look around for some immediately available liquids in my home that I would imagine other people having. Maybe orange juice or milk, or maybe even cleaning product. If I can find something unimaginely stupid to use, but would technically match the instructions given, I would know I should be more specific, because at least one person whou might see the video is probably that stupid.

One of the problems with RUclips is that even if they aren't paid for reviewing an item, in a roundabout way they are via YT earnings. And if they regularly give products negative reviews then companies may be less likely to send them products so their earnings could go down.

It’s crazy how you can point blank say “It’s just a huge time waster” and people won’t even care. It’s just escapism, and most people admit it, like you say. Also half the things you mentioned about what a video essay could be considered, definitely wouldn’t automatically be classified as video essays. It’s the same reason why trashy reality TV shows are always in the top ten. You can say “Oh it’s informative and well researched” and blah blah blah but I would say the majority of people fall under the commenters saying “oh great a 5 hour video I can fall asleep to”. They are all the legions of fans who will thoughtlessly listen (actively or not) to whatever the RUclipsr says. It’s literally sucking away people’s precious time and it’s incredible how people are so willingly to give it away to people who frankly don’t deserve it. I see the number of views a video got, the runtime, and think “Just how many hours, days, YEARS, have been wasted here?”To me, it’s a sense of self worth. Is this garbage hours long video on a 00’s cartoon worth my time? Of course not, and I’m not going to give it to this “creator” who only wants that sweet sweet ad revenue and sponsorship money while contributing nothing of real value. Everyone and everything is fighting for our attention, using psychological tricks and gaming the algorithm, like telling people “What do you think about X? Let me know in the comments below!”. My time would literally be better spent staring out the window at nothing in particular, or just thinking to myself. I’m glad you are trying to find a balance between relaxing with a self professed time waster and leaving time to yourself. If only more people can think critically about these things. But who really cares about all that, right? There’s more 5 hour essays to watch. Time to fall asleep to whatever this random topic is so the creator can get more money.

Being able to condense your thoughts into this clean of a video while at the same time encouraging critical thinking and objective conversation about the subject at hand deserves massive respect. I can barely write a comment without it being one meandering run-on sentence.

Hard disagree on the binary system. I HATE it. It is reductive and leads to empty, hollow, shallow, braindead 'critiques' like 'it was OK'. Yeah, but HOW OK was it? Was it 5/10 OK, or 7/10 OK? Because there is a BIG gulf between those. Also, how WAS it OK? Why was it not 'good' or 'great'? AC/DC's last three albums are all objectively 'OK'. Yet one is infinitely better than the other two, while still not crossing over to 'good' territory. One is about a 6/10, one is a 4/10 and one is a borderline, but not quite, 7/10. See how reductive things get when you don't quantify, and blanket everything under 'it's OK' or 'it's good?' This is just my personal opinion, but I need more than a surface-level platitude for a 'review'. That way of thinking is why you only ever get 1 star or 5 star reviews on anything these days. Because people can't think in mediums any more. They no longer know the difference between a 2/5 and a 4/5 - if it can't be quantified as a 1 or a 5, it probably doesn't exist. /year-too-late rant

As long as AI keeps putting cigarettes in people's noses and randomly adding/subtracting fingers and limbs, it won't pose a threat to artists. As for writing, I am a writer and I HATE the 'just have ChatGPT do it for you' jokes. Because guess what? If you can read at a high school level, you will see right through a ChatGPT article. I read one a while back and it was so hilariously off that I started showing it to people as a joke. I.e. it was talking about a wrestler from TNA while showing pictures of WWE wrestlers, none of which was him, and extolling his title-filled career when the guy was a scrub who had all of ten matches. It even created a blood feud for him, with somebody called Y - because his name was X! While that is THE MOST WRESTLING THING, it is also totally made up by an AI who doesn't actually know about wrestling and is just making it up as it goes like a lazy 14-year-old who forgot to do his homework.

I'm a big fan of longform content because I've loved getting involved in something that someone was so passionate about that they wanted to pour every detail they could think of into it without worrying about runtime. But this video reminded me that length doesn't always mean best research or best quality of detail. Love the prompt for reflection at the end. Really, really useful.

TikTok isn’t like that. I work with TT shop and they only require you to make a video. It doesn’t make you say nice things. Though they might make you promise to do a script, there’s nothing holding you to it. Honestly I’ve seen so many people get scam products as promotion samples and straight up call them out for being scams. You can also gain commission from negative videos.

I am an OG RUclips user, and remember when it was absolutely verboten to post anything over ten minutes, to the point where the limit stretching to fifteen minutes was met with a reaction akin to a deity appearing in plain sight. Cut to fifteen years later, when there are seven-hour videos about SpongeBob Squarepants. I'm old. (PS Fredrik Knudsen is the master of the 'I can't believe you made me spend -insert ridiculous amount of hours- hearing about this.' KrimsonRogue is that for bad literature. I once spent something like twelve hours hearing him talk about a terrible book I had never heard of and had no intention of ever reading.)

REALLY interesting video. Some food for thought here. Of course, I just skip all but the very best of ad-reads (hint: make it a skit and you might keep me) and I am nearly 40 years old and capable of seeing right through most of these products and services, so this topic is moot for me anyway. Still, interesting take on a worthy discussion topic.

I wish people just stopped buying influencer products or that ads were made to only inform of existence rather than sales pitches. Obviously wont happen but it sucks.

As much as I dislike ad reads from social media influencers, I am of the opinion that if social media influencers should be held legally and/or ethically accountable for the garbage they promote, then the narrators, cameramen, editors, set coordinators, and all other persons involved in the production of bog-standard television commercials should be held account for the crap they participated in shilling. That is to say, _no,_ social media influencers shouldn't be held accountable for the products they promote if said products end up being scammy, useless, dumb, misleading, etc.

The [brand] scent pucks mold too actually, so it has no upside over cucumber water. Also no upside over cheap cans of flavored water, or tea you brew in batches and save in your fridge, or, like, anything, whatsoever. (All those things I listed are great btw and I recommend doing some or all of them if you have trouble staying hydrated like me.) ALSO I'm cautious about calling [brand] more health conscious then artificial flavors, the fact that you aren't technically ingesting the stuff they put in the scent rings likely frees them from a lot of regulation, but it's right by your mouth, and it's vaporizing into the air so you can smell it (by inhaling it) so... if you're the kind of person to be freaked out by artificial flavors, you should also be p freaked out by whatever chemicals the scents are made of.

There is a simple solution to this. Dont be a mindless sheep and research the products and services you are interested in. I block ads as much as possible on my devices. If I there is in-video sponsored ad, I usually skip past it. Even if I do end up hearing or seeing and ad and it *actually* sounds interesting, I will take the time to actually read up on the products features, it pros and cons, and look at (hopefully real) user reviews. Then I can make an informed decision on whether its worth my money.

Ripping things off is a great way to learn and start into making things, but Illuminaughti has made a whole ass business and income out of it, AND makes an effort to conceal that it's a rip-off. It's different.

Something that I used to find cute but now annoys me to no end is when the person leads into the sponsorship through something that sounds like it could just be a personal comment or another point of the video itself but nope it's just a sponsor. At this point I'd rather the sponsor be very clearly seperated from the rest of the video, like through some kind of title card. On the other hand a thing that really irked me was a video by a youtuber I used to like (but don't really anymore) that was like an interesting insight into squarespace sponsorships and what it offers and why people take them (iirc, been a while so the subject matter might've been slightly different) just to end the video with "actually this video is sponsored by SquareSpace!" It felt like a betrayal of trust and if the whole video is made for a sponsorship I'd rather be told upfront.

I think it's not that hard to decide which sponsorships are right to accept. First: Do they actually deliver what they promise? Second: Are they not harmful? Gambling and games micro transactions violate that. People gamble to win money but they'll lose money. People play games for fun, not to regularly put more real money in it. When it comes to medical products I'm always sceptical because they can be quite harmful when used by the wrong people even if it's something that's actually good for the right application. And rarely any influencer has enough medical knowledge to judge that, neither can you give the right medical advice when speaking to a general audience

what I noticed recently when looking for a new smartphone is that every list or video on "best cheap smartphone 2024" EXCLUSIVELY talked about midrange phone (400-600 Dollars). meanwhile, I found dozens of phones with specifications that are more than enough for the average user for less than 200. the reason is definitely that they all use affiliate marketing. they prefer getting a cut of the more expensive phones. it's quite annoying, honestly
